In recent months I haven't been very good at keeping up with movies, and it seems [info]hypoxia and I rarely go out to the Theater to see them. It's time-consuming, costly and there haven't been too many releases that seemed worthy of it all. Personally, I don't see the point of going to a theater for something that isn't an eye-popping, big-budget extravaganza. The difference between seeing a drama for nine bucks on the big screen and waiting for it to come out on video when you can see it for three bucks is six bucks, and that's quite a bit to me.

We rented I Am Legend. Growing up, the Richard Matheson story was one of my all-time favorites, and it still is. Many of my dreams revolve around its basic premise. I was curious to see how they handled the subject matter, particularly taking into consideration the campy Charlton Heston version from 1971 (The Omega Man) and the crappy 1964 Vincent Price version (The Last Man On Earth). This one wasn't much better.

They changed the story. WHY?! The story is fucking brilliant. And they changed it. Not in a good or clever way, mind you. Will Smith was great as Neville, and the CGI overgrowth of Manhatten was fabulous. But the creatures were all CGI as well, and looked just as fucking stupid and innocuous as the robots in that other Will Smith bomb, I, Robot. I was excited to find out what Faith No More frontman Mike Patton did with the creature vocals. The answer; not much. Overall, I really didn't like this movie. Instantly forgettable. If you haven't seen it, don't bother. Go read the book. It's still amazing.

We also watched the latest Harry Potter atrocity. I hated the first two but thought the third movie was pretty good. The fourth was a choppy mess. This one was more on par with the third. It elicited emotion out of me, which is more than I can say for the rest of the puerile series. Hermione is still walking around looking constipated, but Potter is asserting himself more and seems less like a dreadful pansy. Same goes for the ugly redhead. Not something I would have enjoyed watching alone but I was with my family so it was cool.

Then we watched The Mist. I read most everything Stephen King wrote while I was growing up. Of all his stories, this one was my favorite. I think I first read it in fourth or fifth grade. I can't believe it took this long to turn it into a movie but this was well worth the wait. The movie is almost flawless. It's exciting, filled with dread and has one of the bleakest endings I've ever seen. The creatures were gruesome, the fright-level was through the roof and the character interplay was phenomenal for a horror movie. If I were only allowed to rate it with five stars I'd still give it six. This is one of my new favorites.

[info]hypoxia and I are good Americans. We haven't even received our government checks and they are already spent in an effort to "stimulate the economy." We bought a fifty inch flat screen television that will be delivered at some point late next week, and tomorrow we're going to pick up the armoire we chose to house the thing. I've always wanted an armoire. I love them. If I ever buy a house there will be an armoire in every room. Even the bathroom.

In other news, I have one week to go until I'm on vacation. I'm counting down the days, believe me.

Armoires ... Heh, I'll have to let you move mine when we buy someplace new. It weighs a ton. It's so heavy that it's caused the floor to settle in the corner it's in. I'll need to fix the drywall line in the wall. I like it though :P

In the two years I worked at the moving company there was only one armoire that bested me. It was about seven feet tall, four feet wide and weighed about six hundred pounds. We had to move it out of a loft area down a flight of stairs that made a ninety degree turn in the middle and out a doorway it barely fit through. Originally we tried it with just me and one other person, but it ultimately took four of us.

I'll never forget that beast.

Couldn't agree more with your take on I Am Legend. I still remember reading it as a teenager and how blown away I was.

The new movie ... there was a point when I first heard about it that I really wanted to give it a chance, but the more I heard about it, the more I knew they screwed it up. Still haven't seen it.

Really surprised to hear Patton couldn't/didn't do something interesting with the vocals ... that was one of the few things that almost got me to go ahead with it.

Yeah, I have an album of his that is about forty-five minutes worth of sounds using just his mouth and a microphone. It's almost impossible to listen to, but it's damn interesting. With the movie it just seemed like they had him come in, make three or four weird screeching noises and then send him on his way. Lame.

And I was really hoping one of the creatures would kick in with "Easy Like Sunday Morning."

I really didn't like the ending in The Mist. The story didn't have one, so they tacked on that?

Oh, I did. The movie went "all the way," and reinforced the bleakness of its premise. There was no satisfactory resolution between the people in the supermarket and there was no satisfactory resolution at the end. The book just sort of ended without an ending, as though King really had no idea how to wrap it up, but Darabont was clear about how he wanted it to end from the start of the project, even taking a a significantly smaller budget and timeline in an effort to make the movie he wanted to make.

It was a very Twilight Zone ending. And I'm a big fan of classic Twilight Zone.

"The book just sort of ended without an ending, as though King really had no idea how to wrap it up"

I always enjoyed that as leaving the possibility of more chapters, even if no one ever wrote them.

"It was a very Twilight Zone ending. And I'm a big fan of classic Twilight Zone."

Exactly why I felt let down. It's been done.... like here, for instance:

Hearing Darabont and King talk about the "twist" in an interview had me set up for something bigger and newer, I suppose.

You seriously liked The Mist?

I vomit in your general direction. I HATED this movie. It was so fucking flaky and over-the-top. Gah! The story was much better. I almost walked out of the theater, the only reason I didn't was because my stomach hurt too much to walk at the time.....and that's a fucking shitty reason to stay in a theater anyways.

Stupid fucking movie

ps. Want to hang out when you're on vaca?

Yeah, but you think Clive Owen is hot, so your opinion isn't worth much.

;P

And yes, we can hang out as much as you would like when I'm on vacation.
