One of the reasons that Powermetal is probably my least favorite Metal genre is precisely because of its upbeat nature. I love classic Punk but hate Ska with a passion because it is essentially poppy Punk with Happy Horns added in. Yet I absolutely adore the Ramones and a lot of their stuff could be classified as "upbeat."

I also grew up listening to Helloween, who are one of the Powermetal genre's pioneers. I guess I get into moods where the "happier" stuff doesn't irritate me as much and I can enjoy the musicianship. I've been tuning in to Helloween, Gamma Ray, Nocturnal Rites, Hammerfall, Iced Earth, Stratovarious and Blind Guardian a lot lately. I'm sure it's just a phase that will lead me back to Thrash and Death in time.
