I deal with a lot of "small talk" during my regular work day. A lot of times that means being forced to discuss the weather quite a bit. By the end of an average day, I'm sick to bloody death with talking about the weather.

Of course, when we have out of the ordinary weather patterns, I pretty much have to hear about it from everybody, no matter where I am. Even here on Livejournal.

Yes, it's the coldest it's been in three years. Yes, it's fifteen degrees below zero with a supposed "wind chill" that makes the air temp feel like forty below. Yes, it's uncomfortable when you go outside. But really, so fucking what? It's not that big a deal. In fact, I think we're being fed some bullshit here.

First of all, in order to have "wind chill" you need wind. I haven't felt much of any wind at all in the past few days, and I spend a good deal of time outside on the average day. Also, the difference between twenty degrees above zero and ten degrees above zero seems pretty apparent to me, but everything below ten degrees pretty much feels exactly the same. If it bothers you so much, don't go outside. Stay at home and quit whining.

I lived in Arizona for a summer about ten years ago. That was much worse than a Minnesota winter. When it gets so hot you can barely breathe, the pavement gets so warm you can feel the intense heat through your shoes, and you have to carry around a pair of mittens just to get into your car without severely burning your hands, that sucks. With cold you just wear more layers of clothing. With heat there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

You have to be a tough sonofabitch to live in Minnesota. We have extreme cold in the winter and extreme heat and humidity in the summer. But it isn't like it lasts very long. You deal with a handful of bad days in each season and the rest are rather nice and comfortable. If it's just too much for you to handle you can always be a pansy ass and move to some vapid place like California or something. Just quite whining. It's irritating.
